Riley and I decided to head to the mall for a few hours last week. I needed to pick up my contact lenses at Lens Crafters. We parked the van outside of Macy’s and entered through the juniors section. I thought, “Let me just take a quick look at the dress section, to find something for Kevin’s wedding.” I told Riley that we would only be a minute. I actually saw a dress that I thought might look good on me, so Riley and I headed into the fitting room. I said, “I’ll be really fast Riley, I promise. Be a good boy for Mama!” And as promised, I was only  about 3 minutes in there before I realized the dress was ALL WRONG for me. So, we headed out of Macy’s and into the mall.

We picked up my contacts and then headed back to Macy’s doing some window shopping along the way. All in all we probably spent an hour in the mall, just looking around and hanging out together.

When it was time to go, we headed back into Macy’s and I thought, “Let me just take one more look at the dresses…maybe I missed something.” I didn’t say a thing to Riley about my idea…but instead just pushed the stroller in the direction of the women’s dress section.

As we neared the dresses and could see them in our sights, I heard Riley cry out from his stroller, “OOOOOH NOOOOOO!” I couldn’t believe my ears. He saw the dresses and started complaining about shopping for them! How could he know to complain at only 18 months old? I laughed hysterically, but continued to shop anyway, like any good woman would…turning a deaf ear on the male she is with.

On that day I learned that it is somewhere buried in the male DNA to NOT like clothes shopping. Even at the tender age of 18 months, Riley is all male and is a victim to the DNA he was born with. He’s lucky I didn’t ask him to hold my purse while I shopped.

“Oooh Nooo!”

March 22nd, 2009

Riley is now 17 months old and talking, talking, talking! One of his favorite things to say (and our favorite to hear) is, “Oh No!”

If Riley falls down, he’ll yell, “Oooh Nooo!”

If he drops something, you’ll hear…”Oooh Nooo!”

If he sees something or someone on TV fall down or drop something, he’ll say, “Oooh, Nooo!”

It really is very, very cute and we sure do enjoy hearing him say it.

If I could have a magic wand, I’d wave it over Riley and make time stand still for a while. He is absolutely adorable right now. He’s learning how to talk…a lot! He repeats everything we say and is now starting to try and form sentences. He can say, “Fur Feet” and “Love You.” Fur Feet comes from his new favorite bedtime book, “The Foot Book” by Dr. Seuss. Bill tells Riley that he has “fuzzy fur feet” when he’s in his footy pajamas…and Riley will reach down, grab his feet and yell, “Fur Feet!” If you ask him his name, Riley will say “EYE-NEE.” It’s close! If you ask him what his dog’s name is, he’ll say, “INNY” which is usually followed by a hearty, “Woof Woof!” We have pictures of the family around the house and he knows exactly who is who. He knows “GA-PA” (and usually calls Grandma the same!), “CACA” (his cousin Collin), “SHAY-SHAY” (Aunt Jenny), “BINE” (Uncle Brian), “AMMY” (cousin Sammy), “KE-KIN” (Uncle Kevin), “OMMY” (cousin Tommy) and is working on Aunt Patsy and Uncle Tom too. He usually just calls Tom, “UNCLE” and can say it very clearly.

We’re not sure if we have a genius on our hands (of course we’d like to THINK so!)…but Riley knows the alphabet! You can show him any letter (even Q) and he’ll tell you what it is. He can also count to five and loves to count on our fingers (not HIS fingers…OURS!). He will randomly count things in the house. You’ll just hear him counting…”UN…TWO…FEE…POOR…FIE” and then you realize he’s actually counting something. One day he was counting and we looked up and sure enough, he was counting the picture frames on the wall!

He is becoming a little social butterfly, too. He loves going up to other kids and saying, “Hi.” The other day he ran out into the cul de sac and said, “Girls! Hi!” to a couple of the neighborhood girls who were playing in front of the house. Unfortunately they are at that age where they want nothing to do with him and completely ignored the poor guy. I guess that was his first experience in getting rejected by a girl!

He is a BIG boy. He’s probably bordering on 30 pounds and is just solid. I’m guessing the doctor will take him off of whole milk at our next appointment. This kid can EAT! When he’s hungry, he’ll eat, eat, eat. His favorite meal is definitely pizza, followed closely by chili. He loves cheese, waffles, bananas, apples, grilled cheese, yogurt, chicken nuggets, apple sauce and ANYTHING SWEET. Riley definitely has the “Munn Sweet Tooth” in him!

Riley has a generous heart. We’re not sure how he got it…you can’t teach that stuff! He loves to share and give things to other people. On one occasion, baby Collin was laying on the floor and Riley walked up to him and gave him his beloved “Pat.” Pat is Riley’s lovey (a teddy bear blanket) that he carries around like Linus carries his blanket. We named it “Pat” because the thing is blue, but the bear has a flower in it’s hair…so we’re not sure if it’s a girl or a boy! Remember the old SNL skit about “Pat?” Well…that’s where it comes from. What kid gives up there lovey for another kid? We think Riley is going to have a big heart!

We can’t believe he’ll be 18 months in a few weeks. Where does the time go?

We have posted new pictures…click here.

Riley Goes to the Circus!

February 21st, 2009

Today we took Riley to the Circus for the very first time. Tom got us tickets to the 11am Saturday showing of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus at Phillips Arena…and got us into the Taco Mac suite! Bill, Kim and Riley met Tom, Patsy and Tommy in the box right before the show…and boy was it a cool place! It was perfect for our little man who wouldn’t sit still – lots of places for him to run free.

Riley actually sat still for about the first 45 minutes of the show. He sat on Dada’s lap and pointed out the elephants and horses. He REALLY enjoyed the dogs that came out to chase the frisbees! He kept pointing and say, “woof woof!” After a while we had to keep him  happy though by filling his face with goldfish crackers and wagon wheels. We packed a little lunch for him and he sat in the suite and ate it during intermission.

Riley also enjoyed the “Globe of Death” where the motorcycles raced around inside. He liked the revving of the engines! He had a great time with cousin Tommy, running up and down the aisle, poking him in the belly and stealing Tommy’s shiny new souvenir (a light up Globe of Death) that Tom and Patsy bought for him. There were several times we thought for sure that we’d lose Riley’s paci as he taunted us with throwing it over the edge of the suite window.

It was Tommy’s first trip to the Circus as well…and boy did he enjoy it! You could see his little face light up when he liked something he saw. His eyes were glued to the show!

By the time the show was over, Riley was very ready to get home. Once his head hit his car seat, he was out like a light.

We took pictures! Click here.

Riley at 15 Months

January 8th, 2009

We just had our 15 month checkup and the Doctor says Riley is PERFECT (I bet she says that to all her patients!). He weighed in at a whopping 27 pounds, 10 ounces. He’s in the 85th percentile for weight, 84th for height and continues to top the charts in the 95th percentile for his GIANT HEAD. The Doc says he’s very proportional! His heart sounds great, too. He had his chicken pox and MMR vaccinations too, and was unfortunately crabby for the next 24 hours. Kim was up with him ALL NIGHT that night as Riley just couldn’t seem to shake the pain from the needles. Not even his paci that he’s addicted to would calm him down!Riley's First Shoes

We bought Riley is very first pair of shoes the day after Christmas. He’s walking like a champ! He’s finally figuring out what to do with his arms and doesn’t always hold them up and close to his body. He’s definitely on the verge of running! He has almost given up crawling altogether.

Riley can recognize the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 and can point out the letter O. He can also tell you which shape is a the circle…and then he actually says, “circle!” He’s talking like CRAZY and will repeat just about anything you say. We think this kid is going to be very smart…probably smarter than we would like! He’s already figured out that if he does something bad and we say “No,” he’ll stop what he’s doing, turn to you and start clapping and yelling, “Yeeeaaaahhhh!” He thinks he is being “good” because he stopped doing the bad thing. He’s something alright!

Pizza Face

January 6th, 2009

Our boy is already taking after his Momma! Kim’s love of pizza is only rivaled by my love of coffee. Since Riley’s way too young to appreciate my addiction (even though he’s starting to point to my coffee cup and say KAH-fee!), I guess I’ll have to let him and his Mom have all the fun…

Riley’s Ride on the Pink Pig

December 30th, 2008

Another email from Kim on December 23, 2008 converted to a blog entry. -Bill

Choo Choo! Riley loved his first ride on The Pink Pig. He cried when the ride stopped…he wanted to keep going! HA HA HA And as you can see by the last photo, Bill was pretty excited about the ride, too! Look at his face…he looks like a little boy in a candy store!

2008 Christmas Tree Hunt

December 30th, 2008

I took Kim’s email to her parents and converted it to a blog entry. She originally wrote this December 8, 2008. -Bill

We’re back from the trip to NC. We got in late last night, gave Riley a bath, put him to bed, put the tree up and went to bed ourselves. We were EXHAUSTED! That mountain air really got us! Riley really behaved well on the ride up and back. He just sat in his car seat, looking out the window, sucking his paci and holding his blanket! Sometimes he read a book or played with his cell phone. He was a dream. How did we get so lucky?

This is the cabin we stayed in. It was very nice…we really enjoyed it!

Cashiers, NC Cabin

The weather was VERY cold up there…they thought they’d get some snow Saturday night! We all huddled on the couch with blankets and tried to keep warm! I put Riley in some slipper socks to keep his little feet warm.

Riley's Slipper Socks

There was an upstairs loft in the cabin and Riley sure liked hanging out up there! We put him to bed in his pack and play up there around 9pm and he wouldn’t have it. He SCREAMED until I went up there and rocked him to sleep in my arms. I think he was scared.

Riley's loft

Riley loved playing with the cupboards! Since there were no safety locks on them he could open and close them as much as he wanted.

All Riley wanted to do was go up and down the stairs, over and over and over and over and over and over again. He’d laugh and try to get up there real fast before we caught him. You should have seen him try to slide down them like he does at home! It didn’t work too well!

Riley spiral staircase

We went to get the tree yesterday (Sunday). It was FREEZING! I had Riley in a turtle neck and sweatshirt, then a heavy winter jacket with a hat and gloves on. I can’t believe he kept the gloves on!

Riley and Kim Huddled in the NC Cold

Here’s Paul Bunyon in the woods, hunting for our tree! It took us over an hour to find a good one…we kept arguing over them! HA HA HA HA I think we were both looking for something we would never find. There are no “perfect” real trees in the world! That stick he’s holding measures how tall the tree is. We got one that was about 8 feet tall.

Christmas Tree Field

We’re freezing our butts off! I carried Riley in the backpack while Bill did the tree hunting.

O'Neill 2008 Christmas Tree

After about an hour, we finally agreed on a tree! This is it! We had to cut the top off a bit to fit in the living room though. We managed to put the lights on it last night before we went to bed and I finished the decorating today. The whole house smells like PINE. Bill is in LOVE with that smell!

This is the truck that brought us down to all the trees. Riley liked the ride and kept pointing at the truck, saying “TRUCK!”

Riley was EXHAUSTED. When we got back up to the lodge, he ate an ENTIRE HAMBURGER (for breakfast he ate THREE pancakes!)! What a pig!

Riley is WALKING!

December 16th, 2008

It finally happened on Thursday, December 11th. At 14 months old, Riley took his first steps! Both Bill and Kim were there to enjoy the very special moment! We knew that he had been “thinking” about walking for a few weeks. He has been cruising around the furniture for awhile, but only recently starting letting go for a few seconds to try out his balance. So we got a few feet feet away from each other and tossed Riley’s blanket between the two of us. Sure enough, he chased the blanket by taking a few steps towards each of us. It was AMAZING. And the smile on his face was priceless. Riley was so proud of himself! He was laughing and Kim was crying…it was a moment we’ll never forget for sure.

Of course he’s by no means an expert walker at this point…he’s doing the “drunk walk” for now! It’s fun to watch him try his legs out. He laughs and has a great time while taking steps. It cracks us up!

He gets better and better every day. He’s taking more steps as the days go by…and soon he’ll be running around here like a crazy man. We know our world is about to change but we are looking forward to this stage in our life together (and looking forward to the much needed exercise!). Let the fun begin!

And…yes…there IS a video! ENJOY! Click here.

Gotta Watch What We Say!

November 11th, 2008

At 13 months, Riley is starting to talk! He can already say a handful of words…maybe not perfectly, but good enough!

His first word was HAT. We have three hats in our hallway (they each belong to Bill’s Dad, Kim’s Dad and Kim’s Grandfather). Riley points at them and says HAT.

When we go into his room in the mornings, Riley usually stands up in his crib and says UP. He knows how to use this word properly, as he does the same thing in his highchair when he’s done eating. When he wants to get up, he says UP!

He can say CAR and points them out all the time, especially in a parking lot. His little finger will go nuts pointing at all the cars…and he’ll say CAR, CAR, CAR.

He learned how to say BALL after he was given a bathtub basketball set for his first birthday. There’s a hoop that suctions to the side of the tub and three basketballs. He’ll swim all over the tub trying to get those balls saying, BALL, BALL.

When he wants a snack, he’ll say ACK.

When he wants to read a book, he’ll say OOK.

Riley will point at our dog, Indy and say, WOOF.

When you say, “Say Purple” he says, PO-PUL.

Our clock in the family room gong-ed two days ago at 5:30. He looked at the clock, pointed and said, CLOCK.

He calls his Grandpa, “PA.”

He says MAMA and DADA and can point us out. He knows exactly who we are!

One of Riley’s favorite things to do everyday is go to the mailbox to get the mail. He’ll say OX and point to the mailbox when he wants to be taken down the driveway to get the mail. He hasn’t mastered opening the box yet, but he sure enjoys it when there’s mail in there! He gets very excited!

If you ask him what sound a snake makes, he’ll say, SSSSSSSSS. If you ask him what a duck says, he’ll say, “KACK.”

A few weeks ago, I was changing Riley on his changing table and Indy was barking like a crazy dog. I looked at Riley and said, “That dog is a pain in the a**.” Sure enough, what did Riley say right back to me??

He said A**.

We now have to watch EVERYTHING we say around our little boy.

Riley is ONE!

September 30th, 2008

Bill and I were just talking last night about how we still can’t believe we have a son.

It’s hard to believe that a full year has passed and we now have a one-year old child. This year has gone by so fast…they’re not kidding when they tell you to enjoy each moment. It feels like we just brought Riley home from the hospital yesterday, but then again it feels like he’s been with us forever. We can’t remember what life was like without him, nor do we want to.

This has been a year of laughter and tears. I can’t tell you how many times we have laughed at our little guy. He certainly has a sense of humor already! He was in trouble the other day for dropping food off of his high chair…so both Bill and I were talking sternly with him, giving him the evil eye and telling him “no.” Riley started dancing to break the tension and all we could do was laugh! And we’ve had our share of tears this past year with sleepless nights and endless baby cries. Sometimes we thought it would never end! Having a new baby around the house was so tough at times, but we got through it all together as a family.

This has been a year of unknowns. In the beginning we didn’t know what cry meant what or how much to feed him or what to do about a diaper rash. After a year of trial and error, Bill and I finally think we are close to experts on what Riley’s needs and wants are…although we’re sure there’s much more to learn about our little boy and there will be new unknowns in the years to come.

And this has been a year of learning about unconditional love. We never knew how much you can actually love another human being. Our hearts are so full of love for our son and there is nothing that could ever change that. It’s amazing. Just when you think you can’t possibly love someone anymore than you already do…you find even more love, hidden away in the corner of your heart. And no matter what this kid does to drive you nuts (throwing food to the dog from his high chair, throwing temper tantrums, etc), you could never, ever stop loving him.

Bill and I agree that we are very, very lucky. We have a wonderful, happy, healthy child who has already brought so much joy to our lives in just one year. We are looking forward to the next year and the years to come…watching Riley grow even more. In the next few months, Riley will surely take his first steps and we are very excited about that! And I’m sure that event will be videotaped and photographed like no other has been!

I put a video together to celebrate Riley’s first year as an O’Neill. It was so much fun to put together. It really brought back some great memories of the past year. Click here to watch and ENJOY!
